In a dramatic political development in Tamil Nadu, opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested from his Chennai residence and transported over 400 kilometres to Thanjavur for police interrogation. The arrest triggered massive show-of-strength protests across the state, with DMK cadres burning effigies, tearing down posters, and clashing with police barricades outside the Thanjavur police station. High-ranking officials, including the Thanjavur SP, were deployed to maintain law and order.
The interrogation follows a case filed against Udayanidhi, which includes two non-bailable offences over controversial remarks. DMK Chief MK Stalin defended his son, stating he did not target anyone specifically and would apologize if he ever made vulgar comments, questioning why Udayanidhi was relocated to Thanjavur instead of being questioned in Chennai. The Madras High Court instructed that Udayanidhi be granted station bail the same day without judicial remand.
Udayanidhi maintained he named no one except Vijay, as tension remains high ahead of the Tamil Nadu state finance budget session.
