08/04/2026 August 4, 2026 Indian government claims no involvement in Hasina's planned speech The Indian government clarified it has no involvement "whatsoever" in Bangladesh's ousted former leader Sheikh Hasina's planned speech at an event in New Delhi. The speech will be live but delivered remotely, and is being hosted by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia.
The event is named "Sheikh Hasina's Homecoming." "The interaction is being organised by a private media entity. The government has no involvement whatsoever in it, neither does it endorse any views that may be expressed at the forum," Ministry for External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters.
Jaiswal did not comment on Bangladesh's specific objection that Hasina should not be allowed to conduct political activity from Indian soil. The former prime minister of Bangladesh has been living in India since she was ousted from her country by student-led protests in August 2024.
Recently, she pledged to return to Bangladesh by December 2026 despite the death sentence that Bangladesh passed against her last October, and several other legal cases.
