The Aam Aadmi Party organized a march towards the Prime Minister's residence in Delhi, submitting over two lakh public petitions opposing the government's E20 ethanol-blended petrol policy. Opposing voices raised concerns over the unavailability of affordable pure petrol, reduced fuel mileage, and potential long-term vehicle engine damage, alongside allegations regarding trade pressure behind the ethanol push. The central government rejected all allegations, clarifying that ethanol used in E20 is domestically sourced from sugarcane and maize distilleries, with American ethanol imports predating the current policy.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas confirmed that E20 has become the default petrol option across regular fuel stations due to cost and logistical constraints, while pure ethanol-free petrol accounts for less than one percent of total fuel sales and remains restricted to premium grades. The government defended the blended fuel initiative on grounds of reduced crude oil import dependence, lower emissions, higher farmer income, and enhanced energy security.
