Rapid Read Pakistani boxer Qudratullah has vanished from his team hotel in Glasgow (Picture credit: Instagram @nocpakistan) In what has come as yet another embarrassing moment for Pakistan’s sporting culture, boxer Qudratullah, who competed in the men’s 60kg boxing at the recent Commonwealth Games in which Sachin Siwach won gold, vanished hours before the Pakistan contingent was to leave for their country from Glasgow.
This isn’t the first time the Pakistan Boxing Federation has found itself in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. In multiple major international tournaments over the years, there have been instances of Pakistani boxers going missing after arriving in foreign nations. As per a PTI report, Qudratullah disappeared from the team hotel after competing in his weight category at the CWG. He had suffered a Round of 16 loss to Northern Ireland’s Jude Gallagher. “The interesting thing is Qudratullah disappeared despite his passport being with the team manager," a source said while speaking to PTI. Reports claimed that two Pakistan boxers, Suleman Baloch and Nazeerullah Khan, went missing during the 2022 CWG in Birmingham as well, despite their passports being held by the team’s contingent head.
During the 2024 World Olympic Qualifiers in Italy, Asian Games gold medallist Zohaib Rasheed stole his roommates’ foreign currency and valuables before disappearing from the town of Busto Arsizio. The 36-member Pakistan contingent returned from the Glasgow CWG with just one medal: a bronze bagged by female boxer Fatima Zahra. The result represents Pakistan’s lowest medal tally since the 1998 CWG, when the nation won one silver medal. According to a report in Geo News, Qudratullah was last seen in his hotel room at around 2 am. The team was scheduled to assemble in the hotel lobby at 9 am before departing for Pakistan. But when officials checked Qudratullah’s room, he was no longer there, according to the report.
Not only his passport, but Qudratullah’s return ticket is also with the team manager.
