Uttar Pradesh’s One District One Product (ODOP) programme, launched by the Yogi Adityanath government in 2018, is aimed at strengthening district-based industries by identifying and promoting traditional products associated with each of the state’s 75 districts. The initiative focusses on existing local specialities rather than creating new industries and seeks to improve production, value addition, branding and market access. The programme builds on Uttar Pradesh’s long-standing district-specific manufacturing and craft traditions. Read Full Story Products such as Banarasi sarees from Varanasi, Chikankari from Lucknow, metal handicrafts from Moradabad, glassware from Firozabad, attar from Kannauj, carpets from Bhadohi and woodcraft from Saharanpur are among the items covered under the initiative.
Under ODOP, district-specific industries are provided support for quality improvement, skill development, infrastructure and market access. The scheme is targeted at artisans, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), producer groups and entrepreneurs engaged in traditional sectors. The government says the objective is to strengthen local value chains and improve the competitiveness of these products. A key component of the programme is its "Local to Global" strategy, which aims to expand the market reach of district products beyond their traditional consumer base.
Eligible enterprises and artisan groups are supported in participating in national and international trade fairs. Several ODOP products are also being marketed through e-commerce platforms and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), providing wider visibility and access to buyers. The state government has stated that the initiative continues to focus on financial assistance, skill development, infrastructure support and market linkages for traditional industries. The district-based approach is intended to preserve local crafts and manufacturing traditions while helping them adapt to changing market conditions.
Overall, ODOP represents a policy effort to connect Uttar Pradesh’s traditional industries with broader domestic and international markets through targeted institutional support, while retaining the district-specific identity of the products involved. Ends
