(Source: PTI) The Madras High Court on Tuesday granted major relief to Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin, directing police to release him on station bail on the same day after completing their questioning in connection with the case over his controversial remarks about actor Trisha. The direction came hours after Udhayanidhi was arrested and taken to Thanjavur for questioning. During the hearing, the Tamil Nadu government’s Advocate General informed the court that the DMK leader had been taken into custody based on complaints filed by women and would be released after the inquiry was completed. Recording the government’s submission, the court directed the police to complete the questioning on Tuesday itself and not extend it until the following day.
The judge ordered that Udhayanidhi be released on station bail immediately after the inquiry, in accordance with the law. The court also accepted the bail plea filed by the DMK leader while directing him to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation and comply with all requirements of the probe. The order came during the hearing of the court proceedings arising out of the case registered against Udhayanidhi over remarks he made against actor Trisha during a protest in Thanjavur on Monday. The controversy erupted after the DMK leader responded to supporters repeatedly chanting actor Trisha’s name while he was attacking Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay over the state’s handling of the Cauvery dispute. His response, widely interpreted by many as a double entendre directed at the actor, sparked widespread political outrage and led to a police complaint by a member of TVK’s women’s wing, Bhairavi.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case against Udhayanidhi under six sections, including non-bailable offences. ‘Ready To Face Consequences’: Udhayanidhi After Arrest Speaking exclusively to CNN-News18 shortly after his arrest, Udhayanidhi Stalin remained defiant, asserting that he had done nothing wrong and was prepared to face the legal consequences. “I am ready to face the consequences," he told CNN-News18. I am ready to face the consequences, and I am not afraid of the fabricated case against me". When reporters asked whether he believed the action was politically motivated, Udhayanidhi replied, “I don’t think they have the brains to make this a political issue.
