Chandrababu Naidu’s Amaravati project, with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) going ahead with a Rs 1,083-crore tender for one of the largest government residential complexes planned in Andhra Pradesh’s capital city. The project is more than a housing scheme and the latest sign of the Centre’s continued commitment to Amaravati after the BJP and the TDP reunited under the NDA. Since the alliance returned to power in Andhra Pradesh, New Delhi has steadily backed Naidu’s long-standing vision of Amaravati through financial support, infrastructure approvals and Central government projects. The latest investment adds another concrete milestone to that effort. Politically, the timing and scale are significant. Amaravati was at the heart of Andhra Pradesh’s political contest after the previous YSRCP government proposed the three-capital model, creating years of uncertainty over the city’s future.
The return of the TDP to power, backed by the BJP at the Centre, marked a decisive shift in policy. Since then, both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Naidu have repeatedly projected Amaravati as the state’s permanent capital, with the Centre increasingly translating that commitment into physical infrastructure. Against that backdrop, the Rs 1,083-crore CPWD project is not merely about constructing apartments. It is about creating the institutional ecosystem required for a functioning capital, say officials. Housing for Central government employees is a crucial component of that ecosystem, enabling officials from departments and agencies to be permanently based in Amaravati as the city’s administrative infrastructure expands. A document accessed by CNN-NEWS18 envisages the planning, design and construction of 1,504 General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) units under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode. The project comprises 600 Type-II quarters, 600 Type-III quarters, 228 Type-IV quarters, 56 Type-V quarters and 20 Type-VI quarters spread across 11 residential towers ranging from G+9 to G+24 floors. The residential township will also include a common double basement, electrical substations, an underground sump with pump room, a sewage treatment plant, an organic waste converter, landscaping, boundary walls, an entrance gate complex and all associated civil, electrical, mechanical and horticulture works.
