The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Tuesday sought to allay concerns over fuel quality, asserting that petrol and diesel sold across the country are subject to regular quality checks and warning of strict action against any instance of contamination or adulteration. The clarification came amid media reports on cases of fuel adulteration found in different parts of the country. “It is hereby clarified that fuel quality is monitored on a regular basis by Oil Marketing Companies. In addition to the advanced and elaborate testing protocols already in place, further checks have been instituted, including water ingress testing 8-12 times a day in over 87,000 outlets. Over 2000 samples have also been tested for chloride/sulphide. Only 2 cases of chloride contamination have been found in the entire country till now, and sales from those pumps were suspended immediately," the ministry said. The ministry also warned that any retail outlet found selling contaminated or adulterated fuel would face stringent action. “Strict action will be taken in case any contamination or adulteration is found in any retail outlet. OMCs have also been instructed to take proactive steps to detect any possible contamination in the entire fuel supply," it added. Crackdown On Fuel Adulteration The government’s clarification comes against the backdrop of a major crackdown by the Lucknow Police on an alleged organised network involved in fuel theft, illegal storage, adulteration and unauthorised sale of petroleum products.
On July 13, Lucknow Police busted an alleged racket involved in fuel theft, adulteration of petrol and diesel, and black marketing of petroleum products under ‘Operation Ethanol Shield’. According to police, four people – Anil Kumar (36), Abhishek Rajput (25), Dheeraj Singh (33) and Ramtirth (35) – were arrested during the operation. The Crime Branch said it launched the probe after receiving intelligence inputs about organised fuel theft and adulteration networks, while also examining concerns linking ethanol-blended petrol with vehicle damage. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Kiran Yadav said the investigation revealed that the accused allegedly siphoned fuel from tankers, stored it illegally and sold it in the black market after adulterating it with solvents. Police said large quantities of petrol, diesel, adulterated fuel, solvents and equipment used in the operation were seized during the raid conducted near the Sanyasi Bagh flyover under the Malihabad police station limits.
