Tamil Nadu Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested over his controversial remarks involving actor Trisha during a DMK rally in Thanjavur. The Madras High Court on Tuesday (August 4) agreed to hear, on the same day, an urgent anticipatory bail plea by Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin, in a case booked against him over remarks made during a public speech in Thanjavur on Monday. The court’s move came even as TVK approached the Commission for Women seeking action against him. Justice GK Ilanthiraiyan accepted a lunch-motion request from senior counsel Hasan Mohammed Jinnah and directed the court registry to list the plea for the afternoon session, after being told Thanjavur police had booked a case against the LoP, The Hindu reported.

When Jinnah pressed for a direction preventing police from arresting the LoP before his anticipatory bail plea could be heard, the judge orally directed government counsel to issue suitable instructions to police while the court examined the matter. The Hindu reported that the judge said he first wanted to know the details of the case — whether an FIR had been registered, the complainant’s allegations, and which legal provisions had been invoked — before ruling on the bail plea. He told Jinnah the court would take up the matter even before lunch if the petition was filed and numbered in time. What Is The Case About? Udhayanidhi Stalin had led a demonstration in Thanjavur on Monday against the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam-led state government’s handling of the Cauvery issue. While criticising Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, he is alleged to have made an objectionable remark after the audience raised chants referencing a film actor — a remark that led to complaints against him with the police as well as the NCW, according to The Hindu.

With a threat of arrest looming just a day before the Assembly’s budget session opens on Wednesday, the matter was mentioned before the High Court for urgent hearing. What Has TVK Told The NCW? TVK has written to the Commission for Women seeking an unconditional public apology from Udhayanidhi Stalin over the remarks.
