Israeli broadcaster Channel 14, citing sources in the know, reported that Khamenei told Pezeshkian any future resignation would be accepted if he chose to step down again.
The warning allegedly followed repeated threats by the Iranian president to resign during disagreements with the country’s leadership over key policy decisions. Iranian officials strongly denied the report, which has nevertheless fuelled speculation about divisions within the country’s leadership. Pezeshkian Reportedly Threatened To Quit Over Policy Differences Channel 14 said Pezeshkian had repeatedly expressed frustration over his government’s limited role in shaping Iran’s national security and foreign policy. The broadcaster claimed the president formally offered to resign in May, arguing that his administration had been “entirely sidelined" from major strategic decisions. It added that Khamenei’s latest warning was intended to signal that resignation threats would no longer influence the country’s leadership. Report Claims IRGC Commander Has Greater Say The Israeli broadcaster also claimed that Khamenei has increasingly backed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Commander Ahmad Vahidi on major issues concerning the United States and the regional conflict.
It said Vahidi’s hardline position now carries greater weight in Tehran’s strategic decision-making, with the IRGC commander allegedly having the final say on key matters involving Washington. The report further claimed that differences between Iran’s civilian leadership and the IRGC have largely diminished. No Direct Talks With US But Backchannel Contacts Continue Channel 14 also reported that there are currently no formal negotiations between Tehran and Washington. It claimed, however, that indirect communication continues through Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, with Qatar and Pakistan acting as intermediaries. The broadcaster further said Iranian leaders believe US President Donald Trump is unlikely to make significant policy changes before the November midterm elections and are therefore seeking to maximise Tehran’s strategic and economic leverage while maintaining pressure.
