The Samajwadi Party (SP) is set to intensify its outreach to Brahmins and other upper-caste voters with a mega event in Lucknow today, signalling an effort to broaden its outreach ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The Prabuddh Sammelan (intellectuals' conference) reflects the party's strategy of expanding beyond its core PDA (Pichda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) formula to counter the narrative of being exclusively an MY-plus (Muslim-Yadav) party. Read Full Story The event, which will be attended by SP president Akhilesh Yadav as the chief guest, is expected to draw more than 20,000 participants, including senior party leaders, former MPs and MLAs, community representatives and seers.
Originally scheduled to be held at Janeshwar Mishra Park, the event was shifted to the party headquarters after permission for the venue was denied. The programme is being organised on the birth anniversary of Janeshwar Mishra, the late socialist leader, Brahmin face of the party and one of its founding figures, giving the outreach campaign historical and ideological backing. The mobilisation has been coordinated by Ballia MP Sanatan Pandey, the SP's only Brahmin Lok Sabha MP, who undertook an extensive statewide campaign to invite Brahmin leaders, former legislators and religious figures to the conference.
The party has also highlighted the roles of senior Brahmin leaders within its organisation, including Leader of the Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey, a seven-time MLA, and former minister Prof Abhishek Mishra. Despite these prominent faces, Brahmin representation within the SP remains limited, with just one Brahmin among its 37 Lok Sabha MPs and relatively modest representation among its MLAs. The BJP continues to command significant support among upper-caste voters in Uttar Pradesh. Through the outreach programme, the SP hopes to expand its appeal without weakening the solidarity of its core PDA support base, a balancing act that is likely to remain central to Akhilesh Yadav's electoral strategy ahead of the 2027 polls.
