Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) approached the Commission for Women (NCW) against Tamil Nadu Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin over his alleged objectionable remarks about actor Trisha during a public rally. Calling the remarks “deeply troubling and offensive", the ruling party sought action against the former deputy chief minister and announced plans to hold statewide protests against him. The controversy stems from a protest meeting on the Cauvery water dispute in Thanjavur on Monday.
During his speech, Udhayanidhi targeted Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, alleging that Tamil Nadu had not received a single drop of Cauvery water while the chief minister remained unconcerned. The rally took a controversial turn when members of the audience began chanting “Trisha, Trisha". Udhayanidhi paused, smiled and made what TVK and the BJP described as an offensive double entendre, triggering widespread criticism. In its complaint to the NCW, TVK alleged that Udhayanidhi had used “offensive, double-meaning remarks and vulgar innuendos" targeting a prominent female public figure. “Such language, delivered from a high-profile political platform, normalises the objectification and verbal harassment of women in public space," the complaint said. The party argued that the remarks fell far short of the standards of decorum expected from public representatives and urged the women’s commission to take suo motu cognisance of the incident and issue a notice to the DMK leader.
TVK also demanded an unconditional public apology from Udhayanidhi for what it described as “objectifying and vulgar rhetoric" against a woman. Additionally, the party has sought the registration of a police case against him for allegedly outraging the modesty of women. The remarks had earlier drawn a sharp response from TVK MLA Rhevanth Charan, who called them “absolutely disgusting". “Passing such disgraceful comments against anyone is completely unacceptable. It exposes the mindset, political culture and declining standards of the clan," Charan said. The BJP also intensified its attack on the DMK leader. Tamil Nadu BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy termed Udhayanidhi’s remarks “disgusting, obscene, vulgar and shameful" and demanded his arrest. He alleged that the comments reflected poorly on the DMK’s political culture and said legal action against the Leader of the Opposition would send a strong message.
