(Photo: PTI) Students in India could soon have the opportunity to pursue internationally recognised degrees without leaving the country, as the University Grants Commission (UGC) has accelerated the process of allowing foreign universities to establish campuses in India. The UGC has issued 16 Letters of Intent (LoIs) to 15 Foreign Higher Educational Institutions (FHEIs) from Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Italy, paving the way for them to set up campuses in several Indian cities. The development was shared by Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

According to the minister, the proposed campuses will be established in Bengaluru, Greater Noida, Gurugram, Mumbai and Chennai, expanding access to global higher education within India. The foreign institutions have indicated that they intend to offer programmes in several high-demand and emerging disciplines, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, Business, Economics, Accounting, Finance, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Game Design and Biomedical Sciences, among others. These programmes are aimed at meeting evolving global academic requirements as well as industry demand. Majumdar informed Parliament that all campuses will function under the University Grants Commission (UGC) (Setting up and Operation of Campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions in India) Regulations, 2023. He said the regulatory framework has been designed to ensure that students studying at these campuses receive an education that is of the same standard as that offered at the parent university abroad, while also ensuring compliance with all applicable Indian laws and regulations.
