According to sources, the high command considered the proposal but decided against announcing a chief ministerial candidate at the last minute, choosing instead to continue backing Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as the state unit chief. The exchange came even as Congress’ Punjab in-charge, Bhupesh Baghel, sat beside him, smiling—a moment that quickly became the talking point of the event. Earlier, Warring had categorically ruled out stepping down, saying organisational appointments were the prerogative of the party high command and not something to be decided through public pressure. Slogans, Posters And Open Factionalism The latest flashpoint came during a Congress workers’ meeting in Muktsar in the presence of Warring and Baghel, where supporters of Channi raised slogans demanding that he be declared the party’s chief ministerial face. Warring later attempted to downplay the incident, alleging that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was trying to politicise Congress events, while insisting there was no internal crisis. However, the optics suggested otherwise. In the days leading up to the Muktsar meeting, posters reading “Baghel Go Back" surfaced in parts of Punjab, reflecting the resentment among sections of party workers over the leadership’s handling of organisational affairs. The posters also coincided with renewed attacks from Channi loyalists demanding greater recognition for the former chief minister’s political stature. Channi’s Pressure Tactics Unlike previous episodes of dissent, Channi has so far avoided directly confronting the party leadership. Instead, his moves have been interpreted as calibrated pressure designed to demonstrate that he continues to command significant support among grassroots workers.
