'Would Like To Meet Him': Trump On Prospects Of Talks With Mojtaba Khamenei Published By, Last Updated: June 03, 2026, 17:56 IST Trump admitted that Mojtaba Khamenei remains influential in Iran's decision-making despite reports about his health. US President Donald Trump and Iran's new Supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei (Photos: AFP) US President Donald Trump has said he would like to meet Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, suggesting that direct talks between the two leaders could take place in the future. Speaking in an interview with the New York Post published on Wednesday, Trump said: “I would like to meet him, and we probably will meet at some point, depending on how it all works out." The remarks come at a time of renewed tensions in the Gulf, where Iranian and US forces exchanged attacks on Wednesday, raising fears of a further escalation in the region. Trump Says Khamenei Remains Influential Trump also suggested that Khamenei remains actively involved in Iran’s decision-making despite reports about his health and his absence from public view since taking office.

Several reports have claimed that Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, was seriously injured during the first day of the war, when US-Israeli strikes targeted Iran’s leadership and killed his father, Ali Khamenei, along with several senior officials and commanders. His condition has not been independently confirmed, and Iranian authorities have given limited information about his health since the attack. “I haven’t had the privilege of meeting him… If you believe the stories, he’s missing a lot of different parts," Trump said. His father and then him, I guess it’s a succession. But we seem to be getting along quite well." Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, assumed Iran’s highest office after his father, Ali Khamenei, was killed in the opening wave of US-Israeli strikes on February 28. The attack marked the beginning of the ongoing war, which have fuelled instability across the Middle East and disrupting global energy markets. Trump’s comments came a day after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers that Khamenei is alive and becoming increasingly involved in the country’s affairs. Speaking before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday, Rubio said there were signs that the Iranian leader was taking a more active role behind the scenes. “I think there are indications out there that he is increasingly engaging at some level," Rubio told senators.
