(AFP photo) Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) core member Khawaja Mehran on Monday called for a mass mobilisation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), urging people from across the region to gather in Rawalakot amid the continuing unrest that has left several people dead.

Addressing supporters at D-Chowk in Rawalakot, Mehran declared that there was “no turning back" for the movement and called on Pakistani troops to leave the city. “The time has come," he said. “Now is the time to stand up. We are presenting our chests for our rights." Mehran also issued a direct message to the security forces stationed in Rawalakot. “We send them a clear message: vacate the city," he said, while insisting that the movement was seeking fundamental rights through lawful means. “Our struggle is for our rights; our struggle is not against any institution. We have taken to the streets legally for our fundamental rights," he said. ‘Everyone, head toward Rawalakot’ Calling for wider participation, Mehran urged people from across PoK to travel to Rawalakot in support of the protesters.

“Everyone, head toward Rawalakot. We will advance very soon," he said, asking all rallies and convoys across the region to converge on the city. He said young people from across PoK had joined the protests to demand their basic rights and claimed that demonstrators had taken control of D-Chowk in Rawalakot. Mehran added that the gathering reflected the determination of the people and expressed hope that their demands would be recognised. The protests have been led by the JAAC, a collective of activist groups that has staged demonstrations for nearly two months over 12 contentious seats in the so-called legislative assembly in PoK.
