(Image: AFP) Ukraine on late Tuesday launched a devastating long-range blitz on Vladimir Putin’s hometown and Russia’s second biggest city, St Petersburg. According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, their air defence had intercepted and destroyed over 350 Ukrainian drones in areas both near to the border and even in Moscow, St Petersburg and western city of Novgorod. CNN quoted governor Aleksandr Beglov confirming that three districts of St. Petersburg were targeted in the overnight Ukrainian drone assault, injuring several people and damaged infrastructure facilities in the city.

The oil terminal is one of Russia‘s largest fuel storage and export facilities. Following the attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy lauded the strikes as “yielding good results". He also confirmed that the oil terminal, “purely military targets" at the Kronstadt base and a Russian arms factory in the Tambov region, were all hit. According to The Sun, a major disruption at St Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport was reported following these attacks. Putin is expected to give a speech at the event as he looks to showcase investment projects and attempt to project Russia’s international relevance despite Western sanctions and the war in Ukraine crippling the economy, The Sun reported. With Ukraine targeting Vladimir Putin’s hometown, it is interesting to note that Russia till now has made several attacks in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s hometown – Kryvyi Rih. According to Reuters, Kryvyi Rih, a steel-and-mining hub in the Dnipropetrovsk region, has been hit repeatedly, with strikes killing civilians and damaging homes and industry.
