And then, in the dead of night, acid poured onto a sleeping man’s face. The shocking sequence of events that unfolded inside a modest home in UP’s Sambhal district culminated when a court sentenced 30-year-old Kahkasha to life imprisonment for attacking her husband Muzaffar Ali while he slept. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1.75 lakh on Kahkasha, bringing legal closure to a case that drew widespread attention for its brutality and the unusual circumstances surrounding it. How Did A Love Marriage Turn Into This? The case traces its roots to 2019, when Kahkasha, a resident of Nagina in neighbouring Bijnor district, married Muzaffar Ali in a love marriage. The couple settled in Sambhal and built a family together. Muzaffar worked as a daily wage labourer while Kahkasha looked after their home. They became parents to two children — a daughter, now five years old, and a son aged around two-and-a-half years. According to the prosecution, the marriage began to deteriorate after Kahkasha allegedly entered into a relationship with a young man living in the neighbourhood.
Muzaffar reportedly came to know about the affair and repeatedly objected to it. Frequent arguments between the couple followed, creating tension within the household. What Happened On The Morning Everything Broke Down? The confrontation reached a breaking point on March 7, 2025. Muzaffar told investigators that he found his wife and her alleged lover in a compromising position inside their house early that morning. When he raised an alarm, the man fled the scene. A heated argument broke out between the husband and wife before neighbours intervened and managed to calm the situation. However, the matter was far from over. What Did She Do That Night? According to the prosecution, after the confrontation, Kahkasha went to a local market and purchased acid. Later that night, while Muzaffar was asleep, she allegedly poured acid directly onto his face and eyes. The attack left him screaming in agony. Investigators said Muzaffar tried to escape after the first assault, but Kahkasha allegedly chased him with a bucket containing more acid and threw another round of the corrosive liquid using a mug. The acid severely damaged his face, eyes, shoulders, and abdomen. Neighbours rushed him to a local hospital before doctors referred him to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. Muzaffar spent nearly six months undergoing treatment in the national capital. Doctors managed to save his life, but his eyesight could not be restored. The attack left him permanently blind in both eyes.
Was There An Attempt To Kill Him Even Before The Acid Attack? The prosecution disclosed another startling allegation during the trial. Special Public Prosecutor Narendra Kumar Yadav told the court that a day before the acid attack, on March 6, 2025, Kahkasha had allegedly attempted to kill her husband by mixing poison in his food. The prosecutor alleged that her brother Mohammad Ahmad, along with Irfan, Mohsin, and her mother-in-law Mehrunnisa, had assisted her in the attempt. No separate FIR, however, was registered in connection with the alleged poisoning incident. How Did The Case Move Through The Courts? The acid attack case moved through the courts over the following year. Kahkasha’s bail plea was rejected by a sessions court in June 2025, although she later secured bail from the Allahabad High Court. The trial continued, and after more than a year of proceedings and ten hearings, Additional District Judge Gopal convicted her on May 27 and reserved the sentence. On Monday, the court sentenced her to life imprisonment. Witnesses present in the courtroom said Kahkasha broke down after hearing the verdict. Accompanied by a woman constable, she covered her face with a dupatta as police escorted her to jail. Her husband, Muzaffar Ali, was also present during the proceedings. Still bearing the scars of the attack, he reportedly kept his face covered with a towel throughout much of the hearing. Will The Verdict Be Challenged? The defence has announced plans to challenge the verdict.
Advocate Pinki Sharma, representing Kahkasha, questioned the delay in registration of the FIR and alleged several inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case. She claimed Kahkasha had effectively been punished for entering into a love marriage and said an appeal would be filed before a higher court. While the legal battle may continue, the case stands out as one of the rare instances in which a man became the victim of a devastating acid attack allegedly carried out by his spouse. For Muzaffar Ali, however, the verdict offers only a measure of justice. The life sentence cannot undo the damage inflicted on a single night in March 2025 — a night that transformed a troubled marriage into a tragedy, leaving a young father blind for the rest of his life.
