K Annamalai, the storied ‘Singham’ who took the political plunge with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu, has expressed his interest to exit the saffron party now. While BJP has reportedly come to terms with the decision, Annamalai’s exit would cut a hole in the party’s current leadership matrix for the state. There is speculation that Annamalai is likely to launch his own outfit, and should that happen soon, his pent-up aggression will find expression in a new shape and form. Notwithstanding his strained relations with the AIADMK under Edappadi K Palaniswami and un-politician-like approach to resolving organisational conflicts, Annamalai was a strong leader and a grassroots politician for the BJP. His impact as a constant irritant to the powers that be in Tamil Nadu are proof that one need not be from the celluloid world to draw a following in the state.
He weaponised fearlessness. Be it launching a severe attack on the then ruling party with his ‘DMK Files’ campaign or taking a firm stand on issues that many politicians would prefer skirting—such as calling the Coimbatore ‘cylinder blast’ of October 2022 a ‘terror attack’—he chose forthrightness over sidestepping. Being a former AIADMK man himself, Nagendran was, in all probability, seen as a bridge to smooth ties with the AIADMK, the opposition party in Tamil Nadu. It was speculated that the AIADMK had made a demand that Annamalai be replaced with a suitable leader for the alliance to progress smoothly. With the BJP taking the approach of alliance to make inroads within the state, the growth room for Annamalai had begun to grow smaller and smaller. Annamalai’s specialty, as it appears, is a Zero-to-One transition. He is in his element when it comes to providing an initial thrust to a new effort, driving attention through power speechmaking, attacking without restraint, and fighting off a battery of questions aimed at the BJP while keeping up the pressure on the DMK.
With the political scenario having transformed dramatically, Annamalai 2.0 would have a strange, unsettling problem at hand: Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). While the power play worked for the DMK, replicating it with the TVK would be a sub-optimal solution for two reasons: the TVK appears to be in a constant mode to reverse ill-thought-out decisions quickly. This takes away any room for brownie point-scoring. Second, C Joseph Vijay, unlike the leaders of DMK, cannot be accused, as yet, of seemingly indefensible charges such as dynasty politics or corruption. How would he differ from the DMK, which already has some scores on board with its ‘Saffronising Thiruvalluvar’ charge. The AIADMK is knotted up in its internal wrangles, but the DMK appears to be hunkering down to fight a powerful enemy (TVK). Annamalai, then, will find himself in the unenviable position of having to prove himself worthy of TVK’s attention, for Vijay has said he would fight no enemy less intimidating than the DMK.
That leaves the BJP’s erstwhile ‘Singham’ at a crossroads. No matter the outcome, what can be said surely is that Annamalai would take the road less travelled.
