Rebel In TMC: Trinamool Splits In Two — Javed Khan, Shiuli Saha & The Full Rebel MLA List Published By, Edited By Last Updated: June 03, 2026, 12:31 IST Barely a month after election results, nearly 60 TMC MLAs — including former Mamata loyalists — have broken ranks, demanding Ritabrata Banerjee as Leader of Opposition. Mamata Banerjee's once-loyal MLAs publicly broke ranks today, marching to the Assembly with 60 signatures against the party leadership. Trinamool Congress has fractured sharply — and openly — barely a month after election results were declared. A rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee arrived at the West Bengal Assembly on Wednesday carrying a letter bearing the signatures of nearly 60 MLAs, in a dramatic escalation that has exposed a deep fault line within the ruling party. The rebel group is set to write to the Speaker demanding that Ritabrata Banerjee — MLA from Uluberia Purba — be recognised as Leader of Opposition. Sandipan Saha of Entally has been proposed as Deputy Leader of Opposition, while Raghunathganj MLA Akhurzzaman’s name has been put forward as Chief Whip.
What Are The Rebels Demanding? The dissidents had been camping in Kolkata for two days ahead of the move. On Tuesday evening, a meeting of rebel MLAs was held at the MLA hostel, attended by Banerjee and Saha, firming up the group’s position before today’s Assembly appearance. minister and Sujapur MLA Sabina Yasmin was unequivocal: “We will propose Ritabrata Banerjee’s name as Leader of Opposition." Who Is Behind the Rebellion? What makes the rebellion significant is its breadth. This is not just a gathering of disgruntled veterans — among those backing the rebel camp are several first-time MLAs who won their seats just weeks ago. A large number of minority-community MLAs from Murshidabad district have also thrown their weight behind the group. Some prominent names include • minister Javed Khan (Kasba) — once considered close to Mamata Banerjee • minister Chandranath Sinha (Bolpur) — another erstwhile Mamata loyalist • Birbhum strongman Kajal Sheikh • minister Shiuli Saha (Keshpur) • Sandipan Saha (Entally), proposed Deputy Leader of Opposition • Ritabrata Banerjee (Uluberia Purba), the rebel face Are All The MLAs Who Showed Up Openly Rebel?
Not quite. Some MLAs who came to the Assembly on Wednesday, June 3, stopped short of openly declaring their rebellion.
