Malviya Nagar Fire Tragedy: How To Escape A Fire In A Crowded Building At least 21 people were killed and several others injured after a major fire broke out at a hotel in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area on Wednesday morning. The fire erupted at the multi-storeyed Micasa Homes located in Hauz Rani in South Delhi. Most of those who lost their lives were foreigners. Several people trapped on the upper floors were forced to jump to safety while local residents rushed to help. As per reports, foreign nationals were among the people trapped in the fire. Residents help trapped occupants escape South District SDM and DDMA official Jitendra Kumar said emergency teams were deployed immediately after information about the fire was received. According to Kumar, a restaurant was operating on the ground floor of the building. People trapped on the upper floors jumped onto mattresses placed on the road by local residents as the fire engulfed the premises.
Rescue workers evacuated a number of occupants from the building, while residents assisted in the rescue effort by laying mattresses to cushion the fall of those trying to escape. A video from the scene showed a woman jumping from the building in an attempt to save her child. A local resident named Om said, “At around 9:30, we saw there was a very intense fire here. My friend and I were on a scooter at that time, the entire fire was raging, and people were jumping from the building from here and there. We saw about 5 people jumping… One person also broke their leg. The entire road was blocked here. Rescue operation under way AAP leader Somnath Bharti said that 27 people had been rescued from the building. “A total of 27 people have been rescued so far. Out of them, I believe seven were found dead. The exact status will be known once we receive confirmation from the hospital as to whether anyone could be revived or not," he said. He said the building had been operating as a hotel and was previously a Khadi Gram building. According to Bharti, the lack of an alternative exit route left people with very limited options to escape.
