A group of Army officers who served during the 1999 Kargil War has set off on a 2,400-km motorcycle expedition across Ladakh, retracing the region’s historic battlefields to honour the soldiers who laid down their lives during Operation Vijay. The 20-member team began the 12-day ‘Gunners Ladakh Odyssey’ on Monday from the Kargil War Memorial in Drass. Organised by the Army’s artillery regiment, the expedition marks the 27th anniversary of Operation Vijay and also commemorates the regiment’s bicentenary.
The expedition was flagged off by Brig Sarit Prakash, Deputy General Officer Commanding, 8 Mountain Division. Tracing The Legacy Of Operation Vijay Led by Maj Gen Arvind Yadav, Additional Director General, Artillery, the riders will travel through some of Ladakh’s most significant battlefields and frontier regions, including the Nubra, Shyok and Chushul valleys. The journey will conclude in Leh on August 14, where Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena will receive the team, officials said. The participants have been selected from Army units that took part in the Kargil War. Throughout the expedition, they will visit war memorials, battlefields and forward posts linked to Operation Vijay, paying tribute to the soldiers who fought in the conflict. Collecting Soil For Living Memorials One of the expedition’s key objectives is to collect soil from battlefields and forward posts across Ladakh.
According to officials, the soil will be used to nurture saplings that will later be planted at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass and the War Memorial in New Delhi. The plantations are intended to serve as a living tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Kargil War. Honouring Soldiers And Their Families Beyond commemorating the bravery of Kargil heroes, the expedition team will also interact with e servicemen and ‘Veer Naris’ (war widows) to honour their contribution and acknowledge their enduring sacrifices. The opening leg of the expedition towards Zorawar Fort in Leh began after participants paid floral tributes to the martyrs at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, reaffirming the artillery regiment’s commitment to the ideals of valour, resilience and selfless service.
