Making his electoral debut from the BJP bastion of Bankipur, Kishor delivered a stunning performance, defeating the saffron party in a constituency it had held for nearly three decades and giving his fledgling party its first electoral victory. Prashant Kishor’s political journey began in 2014, when he emerged as the strategist behind Narendra Modi-led BJP’s successful Lok Sabha election campaign. He later founded the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), advising several major political parties across the country, before briefly joining the JD(U) as its national vice-president in 2018. However, differences with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the Register of Citizens (NRC) led to his expulsion from the party in 2020.
Bankipur Election: A Movement Before A Political Party Two years later, Kishor announced that he would not join any existing political party. Instead, he launched the Jan Suraaj campaign and embarked on a statewide padyatra across Bihar. For nearly two years, he travelled across the state, interacting with people on issues such as education, employment, healthcare, corruption and migration. The campaign was projected as a people’s movement rather than a political outfit. In October 2024, it formally transformed into the Jan Suraaj Party, with Kishor promising an alternative to Bihar’s traditional political players. Bankipur Election: Why Did Jan Suraaj Struggle In 2025? The Jan Suraaj Party contested 238 of Bihar’s 243 Assembly seats in the 2025 elections but failed to open its account. Of its 238 candidates, 236 lost their deposits, underlining the scale of the party’s electoral setback. Several factors have been cited for Jan Suraaj’s poor performance in the 2025 Assembly elections. Many of the party’s candidates were first-time contestants without established political networks or strong local recognition. The party also lacked the organisational strength and grassroots presence of established parties such as the BJP, RJD and JD(U).
