Police and firefighters at the site after a fire broke out at a bed-and-breakfast in a five-storey building in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar area, Wednesday. The Malviya Nagar bed and breakfast where a deadly blaze killed 21 people on Wednesday had clearance to open only six rooms but had opened 25, in a glaring violation of norms. On Wednesday morning, at least 21 people died and many others injured after a massive fire broke out at the Flourish Stay B&B in Hauz Rani in the congested Malviya Nagar area.
According to officials, many of those killed were foreigners. The latest fire incident has once again exposed serious regulatory lapses, with the establishment allegedly operating far beyond its permitted capacity and flouting safety norms. Follow Live Updates Here According to a report by India Today, the investigations have revealed that the property was permitted under the Bed & Breakfast category for only six rooms but was allegedly operating nearly 25 rooms, far exceeding its licensed capacity. They also revealed that guests were alloted rooms in the basement. According to fire officer A K Malik, the building has a basement, ground floor and five upper floors. According to the sources, the eatery operating on the premises was also reportedly licensed under the B&B concept but was functioning beyond approved limits.
‘Only One Common Entry & Exit Point’ Besides, not having the required license, Delhi Police soures said that the hotel had only one common entry and exit point. The Delhi Police have registered a case of culpable homicide against unidentified persons in connection with the fire at a hotel in Malviya Nagar. An investigation is underway to determine whether the hotel had the required fire safety equipment. Many eyewitness accounts and preliminary findings suggested that many victims died due to suffocation, particularly those trapped in the basement area. According to India Today, illegal rooms were operating from the basement, raising concerns over gross violations of fire safety and building norms. The incident comes a day after another major emergency in the national capital, when 10 people were injured following a suspected LPG cylinder explosion that led to the collapse of a building in Delhi’s Mukundpur area on Tuesday morning.
