The ceremony was held at the Glass House in Lok Bhavan, Bengaluru, where Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administered the oath of office and secrecy to Shivakumar. The confusion occurred when the master of ceremonies announced that Vande Mataram would be played. However, the Karnataka state anthem began playing instead. Realising the error, officials abruptly stopped the anthem midway before Vande Mataram was played as originally intended. The incident drew attention as it came days after a controversy in neighbouring Tamil Nadu over the order in which official songs were rendered during a Cabinet swearing-in ceremony.
The row erupted after the Tamil invocation song ‘Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu’ was sung at the end of the swearing-in ceremony of newly inducted ministers in the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay. Several political parties objected to the sequence, noting that the Tamil anthem was rendered after ‘Vande Mataram’ and the Anthem.
