Monsoon rains have caused widespread destruction across India, affecting states from Assam and Kashmir to Gujarat and Kerala. In Kerala, relentless rainfall has triggered severe flooding, leaving at least 15 people dead and thousands homeless. Major rivers, including the Pampa, Meenachil, and Manimala, have overflowed, inundating low-lying areas in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Alappuzha. The Disaster Response Force has deployed speedboats to rescue stranded residents, including the elderly.
Precautionary measures include declaring holidays for educational institutions in 12 districts, while over 11,000 people have been moved to relief camps statewide. The India Meteorological Department forecasts continued heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds ranging from 40 to 50 kilometres per hour. Inundated roads, mudslides in hilly regions, and submerged homes have disrupted daily life, with several regions facing severe waterlogging. Authorities remain on high alert as rescue operations continue across flood-affected zones.
