(IMAGE: PTI FILE) Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Monday sought to quell the growing dissent within the Congress over the cabinet expansion, saying it was “not possible to accommodate everyone" in the ministry and urging disappointed legislators to be patient. “There are more MLAs now; it is not possible to accommodate everyone," Shivakumar told reporters as discontent simmered within the ruling party over the allocation of ministerial berths.
Recalling his own political journey, the chief minister said he too had once been denied a place in the cabinet. “Earlier, I too had missed out on a cabinet berth in Siddaramaiah’s cabinet. But didn’t I become a minister later?" he said. Seeking to reassure disgruntled legislators, Shivakumar said the party would ensure that everyone got an opportunity in due course. “Similarly, we will ensure that everyone gets an opportunity in the future," he said before leaving for Lok Bhavan, where the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place. The remarks came amid growing unrest within the Karnataka Congress, with Yashwantraya Patil resigning after missing out on a cabinet berth, Belur MLA Gopalakrishna expected to resign, and a section of disgruntled legislators holding a closed-door meeting to discuss their next course of action.
As the Shivakumar government inducted its new council of ministers amid dissent within the Congress, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya accused the ruling party of abandoning its promises of social justice, youth empowerment and inclusive representation. In a post on X, Malviya claimed the expanded cabinet had only one woman minister, sidelined younger leaders and offered no representation to the Brahmin community. He also questioned the induction of B Nagendra and Zameer Ahmed Khan, alleging that the Congress had compromised on accountability. “This isn’t the ‘new politics’ Congress promised. It is the same old politics of expediency, selective morality and broken promises," he said.
