The Karnataka cabinet expansion turned into a political spectacle following last-minute delays, list alterations, and widespread discontent within the Congress party. The official swearing-in ceremony at the Vidhan Soudha in Bengaluru was postponed by an hour as intense internal lobbying continued. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar acknowledged the dissatisfaction among several MLAs, calling for patience and citing his own years of waiting before obtaining a ministerial post.
Initially, a list of 20 ministers was discussed, but it was revised to 19 after changes and confusion over candidates, including the exclusion of a first-time MLC whose appointment sparked pushback from senior party leaders. Internal friction escalated as an MLA from Indi constituency submitted his resignation, while Belur Gopalakrishna from Shimoga announced plans to resign. Additionally, supporters of three to four unrewarded MLAs staged street protests.
The expansion aims to fill vacant positions in the state council of ministers to reach the permitted limit.
