AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Monday (August 3, 2026) criticised the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led State government for not having safeguarded Tamil Naduās legally secured āpermanent solutionā to the Cauvery dispute. Interacting with journalists after paying floral homage to freedom fighter āDheeranā Chinnamalaiās statue at Guindy in Chennai, Mr. Palaniswami recalled that the āpermanent solutionā was obtained when his party was in power.
The former Chief Minister said that in the past, whether under the AIADMK government or the DMK government, consultations were held with all political parties and farmersā groups whenever the Cauvery or Mekedatu issues arose. Despite the calls made by him and leaders of other parties and farmersā groups, the present regime in the State was āleast botheredā about it.
On the Karnataka government holding an all-party meeting, the AIADMK leader said: āThere, the government respects political leaders and agricultural leaders. But here, there are doubts whether the government functions at all.ā He added that no one knew what steps had been taken by the TVK-led government with regard to the Cauvery problem.
In a statement, Mr. Palaniswami demanded a compensation of ā¹25,000 an acre for farmers for damages incurred by them, besides uninterrupted power supply for 24 hours to other farmers to enable them to raise paddy.
