(News18) Members of the Kashmiri diaspora staged demonstrations in the United States and the United Kingdom over the weekend, protesting against the crackdown by Pakistani security forces in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and demanding an independent investigation into the reported violence in Rawalakot. In Washington, DC, protesters gathered outside the Pakistan Embassy, raising slogans against the Pakistani military and calling for accountability over what organisers described as a crackdown on civilians in PoK.
The demonstrators also held a Ghaibana Namaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayers in absentia) for those they claimed were killed during the reported violence. Meanwhile, in Luton, UK, hundreds of members of the Kashmiri community marched in a peaceful rally expressing solidarity with the ongoing rights movement in PoK. Protesters carried placards and demanded justice for the victims of the alleged July 27 Rawalakot incident while urging the international community to take note of the situation. Among the key demands raised during the demonstrations were calls for an independent investigation into the reported crackdown, accountability for those responsible, and the withdrawal of Pakistani security forces from PoK. Organisers of the protests said the demonstrations were intended to highlight alleged human rights violations and draw international attention to the situation in the region.
They also vowed to continue peaceful protests until their demands for justice and accountability are addressed. The protests come amid heightened political tensions in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following reports of clashes and security operations in Rawalakot. While activists have alleged excessive use of force against civilians, Pakistani authorities have not publicly accepted the allegations. The demonstrations in Washington and Luton mark the latest in a series of overseas protests by members of the Kashmiri diaspora seeking to internationalise concerns over the situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
