Andhra Pradesh Koppula Velama Corporation Chairman P.V.G. Kumar on Monday (August 3, 2026) asked the Union government to grant Other Backward Classes (OBC) status to the Velama community, so that young people from it could get reservation in Central government jobs and national educational institutions.
Along with Corporation directors Earle Sriramamurthy, Midatana Ravikumar, Rongala Mahesh and others, he will meet S. Savitha, Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, in Amaravati on Tuesday, to ask the State government to send the Union government a detailed note on the socio-economic conditions of the community.
Speaking to the media here, Mr. Kumar said students of the community were unable to get seats in medical colleges, the Indian Institutes of Technology and other institutions in the absence of reservation under the OBC category.
He said the inclusion of the Velama community in the OBC list would help thousands of children.
