Delhi has hundreds of second-hand car dealers, many still not regularised by the government. (Representational Image) Delhi Police have directed officers to closely monitor second-hand car dealerships in the city, weeks ahead of Independence Day, as part of stepped-up security preparedness. According to an Indian Express report, the directive was issued at a meeting chaired by Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, where Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Anil Shukla briefed officers on security arrangements. Station House Officers were told to run special drives verifying documentation of used vehicles sold by dealers, sources told the publication.

Verification of the used-car trade is a routine exercise, but has received added emphasis following the blast near the Red Fort in November 2025, which killed at least 13 people, an official source was quoted. The alleged use of a second-hand car in the incident was specifically raised during the briefing — a Hyundai i20 allegedly linked to the case had reportedly changed hands multiple times without formal transfer of ownership. Why Are Unregularised Dealers Under The Scanner? Delhi has hundreds of second-hand car dealers, many still not regularised by the government, sources were quoted as saying. This regulatory gap makes it easier for vehicles to change hands informally, without documentation being updated — exactly the vulnerability flagged after the Red Fort blast. Officers have now been asked to ensure stolen vehicles are not being sold through such dealers, and that ownership records for used cars are properly maintained and verified.
