Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor (PTI) As Bihar awaits the results of the Bankipur bypoll, the real contest has already offered an insight into two very different election models. For Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) chief Prashant Kishor, it was the first major test of whether the organisation he built through his statewide padyatra could become an electoral force. For the BJP, it was a battle to retain one of its strongest political bastions. The results of the July 30 bypoll will be declared on Monday along with Datia in Madhya Pradesh and Manjalpur in Gujarat. Building an organisation For Kishor, the bypoll marked his electoral debut and became the first major test of the organisation he built after launching the Jan Suraaj Party on October 2, 2024. The party had contested all 243 seats in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections but failed to win any seat. Its Bankipur candidate had secured less than five per cent of the vote.

Pawan was among around 100 fellows retained after the party reduced its campaign staff following the Assembly election setback. He was assigned four booths and operated from a neighbourhood campaign hub known as an “adda". Around 250 professionals worked on the campaign, with separate teams focusing on women voters, caste outreach and booth management. For Kishor, the biggest challenge was converting supporters into active workers. The party wanted about 20 local volunteers at every booth, but most committees could gather only seven to ten people. Many volunteers were ordinary residents, including shopkeepers, rather than experienced political workers. BJP relied on its cadre Unlike the JSP, the BJP depended on an organisational network built over decades. Bankipur has remained a BJP stronghold since the constituency was created after the 2008 delimitation. BJP national president Nitin Nabin represented the seat for five consecutive terms before moving to the Rajya Sabha. His father, Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, had earlier represented the adjoining Patna West constituency. The bypoll also became the BJP’s first electoral test since Samrat Choudhary became Bihar’s first BJP chief minister in April. The party fielded Neeraj Kumar Sinha, deployed around 40 star campaigners and more than 1,000 workers from across Bihar.
