Image of the victim (Credits: X) A man in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur allegedly killed his wife and tried to pass off the murder as a road accident to claim an insurance payout of Rs 44 lakh, police said. The accused, Amar Singh, was arrested along with three others after he allegedly confessed to the crime during police interrogation. According to police, Amar had initially approached them to file a missing person’s complaint for his wife, Rita, but his statements raised suspicion, according to a report by NDTV.
According to police cited by NDTV, Amar later admitted that he and his accomplices assaulted Rita with sticks and clubs before running over her body with a car in an attempt to make her death appear accidental. Rita’s body was recovered late on Wednesday near Baithka Dham Temple in the Lalpura area of Hamirpur. A post-mortem examination found more than 12 external injuries, while nearly all of her internal organs, except the kidneys, had suffered severe damage. Sarvesh Kumar, she was first married in Mainpuri in 2002 and had three daughters and a son. After her first husband’s death, she moved to Kanpur’s Gujaini area, where she met Amar, who worked at a flour mill. The couple got married about two years ago.
Sarvesh alleged that Amar had taken an insurance policy worth Rs 44 lakh in Rita’s name around two months ago and had paid the first premium of Rs 2.60 lakh. “The accused husband himself arrived at the police station to report his wife missing but became entangled during police questioning. Subsequently, the entire matter came to light. The police have solved the case, arrested the accused husband along with his accomplices, and sent them behind bars," Hamirpur Additional Superintendent of Police Arvind Kumar Verma was quoted as saying. Rita’s children are currently living with their paternal grandparents in Mainpuri.
