Heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides across Kerala have claimed eight lives, damaged around 200 homes, and completely destroyed 27 houses. The India Meteorological Department issued orange and red alerts for several districts, including Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Wayanad. Severe waterlogging has affected low-lying areas and major roads, forcing thousands of residents to move into 209 relief camps across the state. In Pathanamthitta and Kottayam, floodwaters entered homes and shops, prompting locals to use boats to navigate flooded streets.
While rainfall has eased in some areas, shopkeepers and residents face extensive losses during ongoing cleaning operations. Meanwhile, a political controversy erupted as the opposition CPM criticized Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan for attending a feast and inaugurating a jewelry shop during the crisis. Rahul Gandhi expressed condolences to the families of victims and urged Congress workers to assist in relief efforts.
