Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram of Vizianagaram district is expected to benefit pharmaceutical, aqua products, horticulture and perishable goods, thanks to special priority for cargo facility in the airport. The new airport has a 5,000 square meters cargo terminal which can handle 25,000 metric tonnes of goods every year. “The new airport at Bhogapuram has been developed with a long term vision to unlock opportunities in trade, cargo, tourism and aviation linked industries,” G.B.S. Raju, Business Chairman of GMR Group stated in a release.
While speaking to The Hindu, A.P. Markfed Chairman Karrotu Bangarraju said that agriculture products can be exported to other States and countries with the availability of a huge cargo facility in the new airport. “The export and import of all goods will create a lot of direct and indirect employment for local people with huge economic and marketing activity,” he added. A businessman and TDP Vizianagaram District president Makkuva Sridhar said that farmers who are growing mango, cashew, coconut and other products would get decent prices with the option of exporting them to other places.
“The farmers are being forced to sell their produce at throwaway prices locally in the absence of transport and marketing facilities. Now, with the availability of cargo infrastructure, they would focus on growing more
horticulture products in Vizianagaram district,” he added. A.P. Chamber of Commerce Board of Director Yarlagadda Geeta Srikanth said that the airport’s cargo and commercial operations would spur economic activity in the entire North Andhra region.
