The Bengaluru East City Corporation on Sunday said that it has piloted a new traffic management model at the Kaggadasapura Railway Crossing and Kaggadasapura Main Road, which has reduced congestion and improved traffic movement without undertaking major civil construction works. Lokhande Snehal Sudhakar, Additional Commissioner, said the model is called Enforced Easy Flow Corridor (EEFC). Effective results According to the corporation officials, the queue clearance time after the Kaggadasapura railway gate opens has reduced by 60% to 75%, while travel time through the junction has fallen by 50% to 60%. Wrong-lane entries have reduced by 90% to 97%. āThe carrying capacity of the junction has also increased substantially, with the number of vehicles passing through every 15 minutes rising from 300 to 400 to more than 700,ā the statement said.
What is the concept? The EEFC concept focuses on scientific study of traffic patterns at busy junctions, factors that lead to congestion and introduction of location-specific engineering measures to improve traffic flow. Unlike conventional road widening or infrastructure projects, the model relies on optimising the available road space through traffic engineering interventions, the corporation said. The pilot project has been implemented around the Kaggadasapura Railway Crossing, covering nearly 175 metres of roadway in three directions. The stretch includes about 50 metres from the railway crossing towards Kaggadasapura Main Road, another 50 metres towards Vignan Nagar and approximately 75 metres towards Mahadevapura.
The interventions The corporation introduced several customised engineering measures suited to the location after a detailed study. The measures include strategically placed barricades, lane dividers, traffic signage, a traffic-stopping chain system, measures to prevent wrong-way movement and streamlined vehicle channelisation. A key feature of the project is the specially designed barricade system deployed across the corridor. The barricades are interconnected through a push-pull chain mechanism, allowing traffic police to regulate vehicles efficiently during peak hours. Additional traffic chains have also been provided to facilitate uninterrupted movement and ensure vehicles remain within designated lanes. āThe barricades have been designed with an interlocking mechanism that enables traffic personnel to quickly create an emergency passage for ambulances, fire service vehicles and other emergency responders.
