The data collection drive to verify the Gruha Jyothi beneficiaries under the jurisdiction of Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) has reached 53.1%, according to MLC and Vice Chairman of the State Guarantee Schemes’ Implementation Authority Dinesh Gooligowda. In a statement here on Saturday, Mr. Gooligowda said the government is providing free electricity to 1.67 crore households across Karnataka under the Gruha Jyothi scheme and there are a total of 25.31 lakh beneficiaries of the scheme under CESC’s jurisdiction, which is spread across the districts of Mysuru, Mandya, Kodagu, Chamarajanagar and Hassan.

If the Bhagya Jyothi, Kuteera Jyothi and Amrutha Jyothi, the older Karnataka Government electricity subsidy schemes merged with Gruha Jyothi, which do not require verification are taken into account, data collection will be required for 20.13 lakh beneficiaries. Out of them, verification had been completed for 10.67 lakh beneficiaries, which accounts for 53.1 per cent, according to Mr. Gooligowda. Launched with the objective of “one electricity connection per family”, Mr. Gooligowda said complaints have been received that some beneficiaries are using the electricity connection for commercial purposes. “Therefore, verification and revision of the scheme are being undertaken,” he said.

While 62% verification has been completed across Karnataka, only 53.1% has been completed in CESC’s jurisdiction, he said. Giving the district-wise progress of verification, he said the data collection has been completed 48.58% in Mysuru district, 59.68% in Mandya district, 56.70% in Kodagu district, 55.23% in Chamarajanagar district and 52.90% in Hassan district. Deadline Meanwhile, the CESC, in a separate statement recently, had said the beneficiaries of the scheme had time until August 31, 2026, to complete the process of data. The clarification had been issued amid confusion and misinformation about the deadline for submitting the details of the beneficiaries.

The electricity consumers availing the benefits of the Gruha Jyothi scheme have been advised to keep the required documents ready when CESC meter readers or authorised personnel visit their homes to collect the details. The documents include Aadhaar card, a passport-size photograph of the beneficiary, Voter ID, PAN card (where applicable), a valid rental agreement (for tenants, where applicable), and ration card (where applicable).
