Baltimore (Maryland) Telangana Congress leaders used the platform of the 19th American Telugu Association (ATA) convention in Baltimore to reach out to the Indian diaspora, urging Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to support the Congress both in Telangana and nationally under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi. Addressing a meeting of the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC), on the sidelines of the ATA convention, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao appealed to overseas Telugus to continue extending their support to the Congress government headed by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. They alleged that forces ‘hostile’ to Telangana’s progress were attempting to tarnish the image of the State government. The leaders accused the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) of leaving Telangana financially weak during its decade-long rule and charged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with trying to expand its political footprint in the State using all ‘its means’.
It will be disastrous for Telangana if these two forces regain power, they said, while calling upon the Telugu diaspora to back the Congress’ vision for the State and the country. Twin pillars Speaking as the chief guest at the IOC representatives’ meeting, Mr. Vikramarka said that the Congress government was pursuing welfare and development as its twin pillars while transforming Telangana into a global investment destination. He said the government had launched the “Telangana Rising 2047” vision with the objective of making the State a $1 trillion economy within the next five years and a $3 trillion economy by 2047. The Deputy Chief Minister announced plans to develop “Bharat Future City” at Mucherla as a pollution-free, net-zero urban centre alongside Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Cyberabad.
He said Telangana’s development strategy envisaged three economic zones — Core Urban (CURE), Peri-Urban (PURE) and Rural Agri (RARE). Claiming that the Congress government had restored fiscal stability after inheriting a debt-ridden economy, Mr. Bhatti said salaries of government employees were now being credited on the first day of every month, compared to delays under the previous regime. He also highlighted the introduction of a ₹1.20 crore accident insurance cover for government employees. He said the government had launched the HYDRAA system to protect lakes, drainage channels and government lands from encroachments and had initiated the Musi Riverfront Project to rejuvenate the river and develop it into a tourism and commercial hub. Inviting overseas Telugu entrepreneurs to become partners in Telangana’s growth story, Mr. Bhatti said rapid progress on the Regional Ring Road, Metro Rail Phase-II expansion and rising investments had helped raise the State’s per capita income to ₹4.18 lakh.
