Hamim Mondal, the alleged Jaish-e-Mohammad-linked terror suspect arrested by the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF), was in contact with several foreign-based handlers through social media platforms and WhatsApp, according to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the state police. Mondal was arrested two days ago from Purba Bardhaman district. Investigators have accused him of being linked to Pakistan-based operatives and allegedly planning to create unrest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar during the Cockroach Janta Party’s protest. FIR Lists Pakistan, US, UK and Mexico-Based Contacts According to the FIR, investigators identified six social media accounts and WhatsApp numbers allegedly used by Mondal to communicate with his handlers.
Among them were two Pakistan-based numbers beginning with the country code +92, operated under the names “Rana" and “C9Uzhair". Another number with the US country code +1 was allegedly operated by a person identified as “Abid Jutt". The FIR also mentions contacts using phone numbers from the United Kingdom and Mexico, which were reportedly operated under the name “Hamid". Police have also referred to an Element X account, @ranabhai:matrix.org, which they alleged was being operated from Pakistan. The FIR states that investigators recovered chats between Mondal and his alleged handlers from his mobile phones during the investigation. Police Allege Espionage Network, Assassination Plot The FIR alleges that Mondal and his associates were working in coordination with handlers based in Pakistan to run an espionage network in India. According to the document, the network was involved in recruiting local youths, arranging weapons, gathering intelligence on important installations and dignitaries, and carrying out other serious criminal activities.
The police said these alleged activities were intended to disrupt public order and threaten India’s sovereignty, integrity and national security. Mondal’s girlfriend, Arpita Sarkar, was arrested in Jharkhand on Friday. Investigators alleged that the couple had conspired to kidnap the son of state minister Umesh Ray and extort money from the family. The FIR further alleges that Sarkar had been assigned the task of gaining access to the office of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari through a honey trap, after which a plan to assassinate him was to be executed. Officials said the duo was allegedly acting at the behest of Pakistani handlers linked to the Shahzad Bhatti gang. The STF has also claimed that Mondal was radicalised through social media. According to investigators, Mondal and Sarkar first met on Instagram and had been in a relationship for the past four years.
