Friendship Day was observed with a tree conservation initiative in Visakhapatnam on Sunday, as participants offered prayers at a big banyan tree estimated to be about 140 years old on Railway Station Road in Dondaparthy. The programme was organised by the Green Climate Team, an NGO working for environmental protection and tree conservation in association with Vanamali, CTG, IIAM, ActionAid and Rotary Couples.
Green Climate Team founder-secretary J.V. Ratnam said the organisation would promote seed rakhis, organise Vriksha Bandhan programmes and encourage the planting and protection of palm groves. Vanamali CTG administrator Malla Saritha urged people to conserve natural resources and forests. Referring to the Bishnoi community’s tradition of protecting trees, she said the practice highlighted the importance of safeguarding the environment.
IIAM professor Varalakshmi said students would participate in Vriksha Bandhan programmes to be held till August 28 to promote awareness on forest conservation and climate
change. Representatives of the participating organisations, volunteers and students took part in the programme.
