KPTCL to replace mineral oil with ester oil in high-capacity transformers across Karnataka

Despite the price of ester oil being higher than mineral oil, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) has planned to replace mineral oil with ester oil in high-capacity transformers across the State in the next one year. A senior official from the KPTCL said, “The ester oil is derived from vegetables, and it acts as a coolant and because of its high flash point, the transformer resists ignition. It is also highly biodegradable, non-toxic, and helps extend the lifespan of the transformer.
Rather than incurring substantial capital expenditure on replacing ageing transformers during rains, the KPTCL has adopted a cost-effective approach by upgrading transformers that are over 15 years old. Thus improving their performance and extending their service life.” The official said, “At present, as per the KPTCL schedule of rates, the mineral oil costs ₹213 per litre while ester oil costs ₹275 per litre. However, the cost incurred on damaged transformers is higher than the cost incurred in procuring ester oil.” The KPTCL operates 3,754 transformers across the State.
As part of its modernisation strategy, the utility has already replaced conventional mineral oil with ester oil in 45 high-capacity transformers. Approximately, 1,500 litres of ester oil worth more than ₹8 lakh has been used in these transformers. According to the details provided by the KPTCL, the ester oil was first used in Harapanahalli substation near Davangere in 2017 on a pilot project basis and yielded positive results. The official further informed that not just Karnataka, other States including Gujarat, Maharastra, Mumbai (Tata Power) power grids have also used ester oil.
“We have used the ester oil in C.T. Kere substation in Tumakuru, Dobspet station in Nelamangala, Rajajinagar, Pottery Road station in Hebbala, Banashankari station in Subramanyapura, Doddaballapur, Bagepalli and other stations. The initiative is expected to enhance the thermal efficiency of ageing grid assets while significantly reducing the environmental risks associated with petroleum-based transformer oils,” the official said.
