A woman in her 30s died after a tiger attacked her in Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat district in the early hours of Sunday, officials said. The woman, identified as Sugni Bai Dhurve, suffered grievous head injuries and was taken to a hospital in Baihar, where she died, Block Medical Officer Dr Anant Lilhare said. The attack took place in Parrapur Baigatola village under the Khapa range of the Kanha Park. Assistant Director of the Sijhora Buffer Zone Ashish Pandey confirmed the incident and said a detailed report would be prepared after an inquiry, while police said a case of accidental death has been registered and further investigation is under way.
Read Full Story According to villagers, Dhurve was sleeping in a hut when the tiger entered the village, around 80 km from the district headquarters, at about 1.30 am. They said the animal grabbed her by the head and dragged her away. After hearing the family's cries for help, local residents rushed to the spot with torches. The tiger dragged her for about 300 metres before leaving her and disappearing into the forest, they added. Forest officials said the village has seen several instances of tigers and leopards entering human habitations in recent months.
They said the victim's family would be given financial assistance as per government norms. The forest department also said it would install a cage in the area, step up patrolling, and urged residents to keep house doors shut at night, avoid going into the forest, and not leave children and elderly people unattended. Local representatives claimed the woman's family lives in a hut without a door and alleged that it has not benefited from a central government scheme aimed at the socio-economic development of the most backward and vulnerable tribal groups.
The attack has prompted fresh measures in the area as officials investigate the incident and prepare assistance for the family. Ends
