Three people who went missing following a landslip in Tirthahalli town have been found dead. The deceased have been identified as Malikarjun, around 30, his wife Nagaveni, around 27, and their three-year-old son Santosh. They were natives of Kakkargol in Karatagi taluk of Koppal district. Mallikarjun and Nagaveni had come to Tirthahalli four days ago to work in plantations, leaving behind their two daughters at their native place.
The family was living in a shed located just beneath a hillock in the Gandhi Nagar locality of Tirthahalli town. Following heavy rains on Saturday night, landslips occurred around 3.30–3.45 a.m., trapping four residents under the debris. One person named Hanumanthu was rescued by the Fire and Emergency Services team in the morning. He was first shifted to Tirthahalli and later taken to Megan Hospital in Sumagha for treatment.
Later, the bodies of the three were retrieved from the debris with the help of earthmovers. The Tirthahalli taluk administration has shifted the migrant workers, settled at the place, to a temporary care centre set up at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhavan in the town. Shivamogga Assistant Commissioner Satyanarayana, Tirthahalli tahsildar S. Ranjith, senior police officers and others monitored the rescue operations.
The officers informed the family members of the deceased. The process for the compensation for the victim’s family would begin shortly, the officers stated.
