Opposition parties in Goa have begun preliminary talks on a possible alliance for the 2027 Assembly elections, with the Congress and the Goa Forward Party opening discussions and the Aam Aadmi Party also indicating it is open to a tie-up. The early moves come as parties start positioning themselves for the 40-member Assembly election, likely in February-March 2027, while the BJP has already said it is aiming to win at least 30 seats and return to power in the state for a fourth straight term.
Read Full Story Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Girish Chodankar told PTI on Sunday that he had held talks with Goa Forward Party chief Vijai Sardesai on forming an alliance. The two leaders met in Fatorda in South Goa on Saturday. The Congress and GFP had contested the 2022 Goa Assembly polls together. Chodankar said the discussions held on Saturday were only preliminary and that a decision on renewing the alliance is yet to be taken. "We will be meeting again to hammer out and finalise details, including seat sharing," he said.
Meanwhile, AAP Goa president Valmiki Naik on Saturday met the party committee formed to decide on a tie-up with like-minded parties. Speaking to reporters, Naik said the AAP was ready to ally with like-minded parties, as "the main aim is to defeat the corrupt BJP government in the state". The BJP is currently in power in Goa with the support of 33 MLAs. Of these, 28 belong to the BJP, three are Independents and two are from the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party.
In the 2022 Assembly elections, the BJP had won 20 of the 40 seats, but later brought eight Congress MLAs into the party. At present, the Congress has three MLAs, the AAP has two, while the GFP and the Revolutionary Goans Party have one legislator each. With preliminary alliance talks now under way, opposition parties have started exploring a common strategy ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly polls. Ends
