Rapid Read Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said substance abuse was pushing young people away from their dreams and urged society to work collectively to protect the country’s youth from addiction. PM Modi launched the ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’ through video conferencing. The initiative aims to inspire young people to stay away from substance abuse and encourage them to become ambassadors of positive social change in their communities. Addressing a gathering virtually as part of the ‘Drug-Free Youth’ initiative under the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan, PM Modi described India’s young population as the “Amrit Peedhi" (the nectar generation) and stressed the need to safeguard them from the dangers of drug abuse.
“Substance abuse takes the youth away from their dreams," the Prime Minister said, adding that the country’s future depends on the aspirations and potential of its younger generation. Highlighting the broader significance of the campaign, PM Modi said the movement was not only aimed at individuals struggling with addiction but also sought to strengthen families, communities and the nation as a whole. “The campaign we are witnessing today is for the individual, the family, and society; above all, it is for the nation," he said. Referring to the initiative’s objectives, PM Modi said the name itself reflected its commitment to creating a drug-free generation. “The very name of this movement — the ‘Drug-Free Youth’ initiative under the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan — clarifies its resolve," he said. The Prime Minister noted that the campaign was launched last year as a pilot project in Kashi and has since expanded with the participation of several organisations.
According to him, more than 125 spiritual organisations have joined the effort to work for the welfare of millions of citizens. “Over 125 spiritual organisations have joined us today for the welfare of crores of our fellow citizens," he said. PM Modi underscored the need for sustained efforts to prevent young people from falling into addiction. “We must save the youth from falling into the clutches of drug abuse," he said, describing substance abuse as a long-recognised social evil. “In our society, drug abuse has always been viewed as a vice," the Prime Minister said. He also highlighted the role of cultural values and support systems in tackling addiction. According to PM Modi, Indian traditions have long offered guidance against harmful practices while encouraging positive life choices. “Our culture offers both warnings for protection and pathways to safety," he said. The Prime Minister pointed out that modern support mechanisms, including rehabilitation centres, are now available to help people overcome addiction and rebuild their lives.
