While the minimum amount of money applicants must show has not changed, immigration officers will now take a closer look at where those funds come from and whether students genuinely have the financial capacity to support themselves throughout their studies. The updated instructions apply to study permit applications and are aimed at strengthening the assessment process for international students. Why Canada Updated Its Study Permit Rules? The new guidance directs immigration officers to conduct a more detailed assessment of applicants’ finances before approving study permits. Under the revised rules, officers must examine not only the amount of money applicants have but also the source of those funds. They may also request additional financial and employment documents from applicants or their families to verify that the funds are genuine and sufficient.

The move is intended to ensure that students can financially support themselves during their stay in Canada and that study permits are issued only to genuine students. What Has Changed In Financial Assessment? The biggest change is that immigration officers are now required to assess the source of funds in every study permit application. Previously, additional financial scrutiny was generally recommended only in “some very high-risk environments." That qualification has now been removed, meaning all applicants could face closer examination regardless of where they are applying from. The updated guidance also gives officers greater discretion to request additional documents whenever they believe further verification is needed based on the facts of an individual application. What Financial Documents Can Immigration Officers Ask For? Applicants may now be asked to submit six months of bank statements, including the month in which- or immediately before- they file their study permit application. Earlier guidance referred to four months of bank statements, making this another notable change in the assessment process. Canada has also expanded the list of acceptable proof of funds. Pension income and rental income are now specifically mentioned as examples of financial documents applicants can submit. At the same time, an earlier reference to a bank draft convertible into Canadian dollars has been removed from the guidance.
