(Image source: Reuters) The United States raised its travel advisory for Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta to Level 3, urging Americans to reconsider travel after around 60,000 migrants crossed into the territory from Morocco. In an advisory issued by the US Department of State, Washington cited the deteriorating security situation in Ceuta and warned that the large-scale influx of migrants could lead to “unpredictable and dangerous" conditions.
“The massive and uncontrolled arrival of migrants from Morocco to Ceuta may lead to unpredictable and dangerous security situations. Spain has deployed the Spanish military, Spanish Police, and Guardia Civil as a result of this serious situation," the advisory said. The advisory applies only to Ceuta, which borders Morocco. The rest of Spain remains under its existing travel advisory level. The move comes nearly two days after tens of thousands of migrants entered the Spanish enclave by swimming across the maritime border and climbing border fences, overwhelming local authorities in one of the largest migration surges seen in the region in recent years. The US warning also coincided with criticism of Spain’s handling of the crisis by US Assistant Secretary of State Dylan Johnson.
Speaking to Fox News Digital, Johnson blamed Spain’s centre-left government for failing to secure its borders. “This invasion is the direct result of the Spanish government’s refusal to secure its borders and defend its people and now threatens the security of Europe," he said. The influx left dozens of migrants dead while thousands more were intercepted or repatriated by Spanish authorities. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the government would reinforce security in Ceuta, deploy a physical sea barrier to facilitate migrant repatriations and continue working with Moroccan authorities to dismantle human trafficking networks.
