(AI-generated image/News18) A 16-year-old girl’s body was exhumed from a grave in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh on Saturday (August 1), nearly two months after she was buried, after allegations casting doubt on the circumstances surrounding her death prompted the district administration to order a fresh investigation. The exhumation was carried out at the Shah Jamal graveyard under the Kotwali police station limits in the presence of district officials, including City Magistrate Atul Gupta, along with police personnel.
The body was exhumed 52 days after the girl’s burial, following a complaint that questioned the sequence of events leading to her death, according to news agency PTI. The fresh probe was initiated after a written representation by resident Dularay Khan, who alleged that he heard screams coming from a house in the Shah Jamal locality on the morning of June 8 while returning from a nearby mosque. Khan claimed he immediately knocked on the door after hearing the cries but received no response from inside the house. He further alleged that when he returned the following day, neighbours informed him that a teenage girl residing in the house had died suddenly. He claimed the girl had already been buried before sunrise in the presence of her family members. Khan also alleged that he informed the local police about the incident, but no action was taken at the time. He further claimed that he later received death threats against continuing to pursue the matter and raising questions over the girl’s death.
After Khan’s complaint reached District Magistrate Avinash Kumar and senior police officials, the district administration directed that the girl’s body be exhumed so that the circumstances surrounding her death could be examined afresh. The exhumation was conducted at Shah Jamal graveyard after all mandatory legal procedures were completed. City Magistrate Atul Gupta said the process was carried out in accordance with the law. “The body was exhumed after completing the required legal formalities and sent for a post-mortem," Gupta said, according to PTI. He added that the police have now launched a detailed investigation into the case on the basis of the fresh evidence that emerges during the inquiry. Officials said the post-mortem examination will now play a crucial role in establishing the cause of the teenager’s death and whether any suspicious circumstances were involved. The investigation is expected to rely on the findings of the post-mortem report along with other evidence collected during the fresh probe.
