(AFP photo) US President Donald Trump said that Washington called off a planned military strike on Iran after Tehran and other Middle Eastern countries requested more time to finalise a proposed agreement that would include the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Donald Trump said the US military was “locked and loaded" for an attack on the Islamic Republic of Iran “at levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II." Despite that, Donald Trump said he had agreed to cancel the operation after being informed that the framework of a deal had been reached.
“The U.S.A. is locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran, at levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II. Despite this, we have just been asked by Iran, and other Middle Eastern Countries, to hold off any attack in that the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to," Donald Trump wrote. The proposed agreement would include the “Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT" as well as “an end to Iran’s nuclear threat", the US President said. “Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL," he said. Donald Trump also claimed that Israel had joined the United States in delaying military action while negotiations continued.
“The Country of Israel joins me in this commitment. Get to work, everybody, and get it DONE. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" he added. The announcement came amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran. Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Iran would respond forcefully to any fresh American military action during separate conversations with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Pakistani Field Marshal Asim Munir and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud. Araghchi said Tehran would respond “decisively and proportionally" to any aggression by the US, Israel or other countries in the region. Fidan, in a post on social media, said the two sides had discussed “the latest status of the ongoing negotiation process."
